This shares the lower 1/2 of Deadwood Direct, before cutting left for the upper 1/2.   The bottom is a bit of a conundrum currently. While cleaning/equipping this I shrugged off a potential traversing start from the right as it entailed climbing on some very suspect looking jugs through the crunchy lower band of light colored rock. I placed the first bolt intending this to start with a stickclip (stick is there) and winch past the blankish roof to the bolt and starting from there. However, when I finally got back months later to climb this, I played around on the choss jugs to the right and they held up. I led this with the 1st bolt stickclipped, gingerly traversing these choss jugs at about .10-. I intend to return to this in spring 2015 to clean and test these features with the prybar and if they stay strong, I'll add another bolt to this start.    From the 1st bolt, climb jugs past a 2nd bolt into a short, left-facing dihedral, cut left under a roof and around a scary block (I tried and tried and couldn't budge it with the bar, I have done pullups on it on TR, it seems pretty set on staying there...), where Deadwood continues straight above, cut left around the corner into a nice dihedral with stemming and good edges, exit this left under a bulge to the anchors on Stihl Refinery.    A decent trad line for the grade, on mostly good rock and gear. It's pretty much necessary to have someone follow this to clean it.

Amble up a featured slab to the roof above, layback and finagle your way out the roof to jugs, work interesting features up the steep slab above with a couple lines possible, but the best option seems to stay slightly left. This one is all about the cool roof moves!

Belly up to a bulge, snag a surprising jug and yard through on crimp rails (tough 2nd clip), awkwardly stand up (long-legged folk will probably find this more tenuous) and hit the "golf ball" pocket out left, make a sequential cross right on hidden crimps and breath easy as you finish on generous diagonal jug rails.    Another fun line that offers lots of cool features on its short voyage.

This is a great warm-up for the wall, and is a very nice outing for the grade, despite its diminutive height. Start with steep pockets to a right-facing ear flake with a handcrack, jam/undercling/layback around the ear, cut left and weave up very cool features including the "potato" knob and assorted jugs/plates to the top.

From the 1st bolt, climb jugs past a 2nd bolt into a short, left-facing dihedral, cut left under a roof and pull over a scary block (I tried and tried and couldn't budge it with the bar, I have done pullups on it on TR, it seems pretty set on staying there...) into a tricky fingercrack, regroup before cutting right and busting a burly crux over the final mini-roof using a combination of face features, jams, and body english.

This is the best route here, and the best looking. Start up crunchy light rock on hollow jugs (stickclip?) and quickly cut right onto varnished, red stone with some pockets and crimps to a shelf, layback/stem up the clean flake/corner above the shelf on very good rock, make a crux reach (or deadpoint) out of the corner to a series of right-trending horizontal features, squirm up an awkward hand/fistcrack under the upper bulge (hint--keep feet low) and bust right out the final bulging headwall on hero jugs.    A varied and cool line!

This compact buttress of featured Dacite offers a half-dozen worthwhile routes and provides another pleasant cragging venue on Flagstaff's backyard mountain. It's perched high on Elden, and although south-facing, is a good summer option as it's shaded in the morning and late afternoon/evening. The wall's position in a shallow ravine on the eastern flank of Elden generally shelters it from the strong winds of the spring and early summer.  

  Like the One Wall, the Sawyer Wall is approached from the top of Elden; this makes for a longer drive from town, but a shorter hike than most of the mountain's other crags. It is one of the most straightforward approaches of any of the Elden crags, since the cliff sits only a couple of hundred feet off of the Mt. Elden Lookout Trail. The bulk of the hike is on this well-established trail, with a minimal amount of off-trail rambling required to descend to the wall.
