Solid rock after easier climbing down low on flakier rock. Prolonged crux on steep overhanging rock with thin holds. A very fun climb and I'll have to wash the chalk off the good holds to give you the real experience! Ascends through the middle of a dark colored vertical swath that marked better quality rock for the area. The lower 6 bolts to the overhang placed ground up, the upper 2 put in from above. Runout to the anchors up top as the climbing is very easy. If you expect burnt forearms, bring a couple medium cams for the upper section.

Hiding from the Torch

A fully bolted line that begins to the right of "Hiding from the Torch" atop a large block. Climb straight up moderate climbing and then follow the natural line right to a sustained and delicate steep crux section. Bolts are clipped from natural stances and are relatively widely spaced, but offer secure protection. The high first bolt is due to the poor rock quality (for bolting) low down.

Belay from base of the north-facing buttress that is directly to the west of the rock formation that runs between Octabulgey and Periscope. FA as well as rope solos done without the bolt, but the bolt was added to protect the lower crux as the natural protection to clear the bulge is not terrific. Rap/lower from two-bolt anchor at the top of the formation. There is an added bolt on top of the buttress to enable safe access to the anchors in case you come in from the top.

Detached buttress south of the main Shadow Buttress. Access by walking along base of the west-facing rock from the base of Hiding from the Torch. Follow axis of the buttress that forms an arête to the top using ample horizontal cracks for protection. Also good for LD trad practice.

This is the route to the right of "Bulgey or Bustey" that begins from the ground, about 20 ft lower and farther west. FA and subsequent ascents done on gear only, but 1 bolt was added above the obvious gear near the base that will help you locate the start. Opening moves can be tricky, but are spottable with a small cam protecting. Runout easy ground on a gentle ramp leads to the blocky steeper section with decent gear. A second bolt was also added near the top to protect the thin vertical face prior to easier ground to the same anchors used for Bulgey or Busty.

You can access these buttress, and the wonderfully shaded and magically hidden area, either by scrambling across top of the rock formation that runs from the top of Octabulgey and forms the wall that Torch View and Periscope climb the east facing face of, or by crawling through a tunnel that is just to the right of Torch View. The main Shadow Buttress, and the one ~50m to the southwest that is Ramp-Art, are both north-facing formations that are gently sloped at the base and are vertical nearing the top. There is also easy access using the trail that heads directly towards the Torch from the north. Three projects ascend the west-facing rock between the prows of the two buttresses.
